MORE ON CRAVINGS; THE FIRST MECHANIC OF ADDICTION |
|
Some withdrawl symptoms and cravings are caused by poor nutrition and the vitamin depletion that follows substance abuse. When the body lacks certain nutrients, it cannot make some of the substances it needs for health and energy, causing a person to feel tired and moody. Depletion of certain vitamins and minerals can also cause shakiness, muscel tremors and pains. Withdrawal symptoms and cravings may also result from the toxins (substances the body sees as poisons) that accumulate after repeated drug or alcohol use. These toxins stress many of the body's systems, resulting in fatigue, aches, pains and unclear thinking. The addicted person has learned to medicate thier mental or physical problems away with drugs; they will continue to use chemicals as a solution to feeling poorly. Therefore attempting to help an addict live a sober life through substitute medications doesn't accomplish long term sobriety and in fact complicates the addiction making it harder to resolve. The only place medications have in drug rehabilitation is if a person is addicted to specific drugs that can cause life threatening withdrawal symptoms during a medically supervised detox program. After that substitute medications do not help the addict in terms of long term sobriety.
